Treatment of Scheuermann’s Disease
Physiotherapy is often recommended for individuals diagnosed with Scheuermann’s disease. However, the quality and focus of treatment can vary significantly and may include general back exercises, strength training, and manual therapy. For adults, treatment is usually sought due to back pain and a desire to prevent worsening of forward-hunched posture.
At ScolioFys, we are specialized in the treatment of Scheuermann’s disease, and—as with scoliosis—this diagnosis requires a tailored and specific approach for each patient.
Initial Assessment
To ensure the most accurate and effective treatment, we require that X-rays be brought to the first consultation. These are analyzed for spinal curves and compensations in both the sagittal plane (lateral view) and frontal plane (PA view). We measure:
- The degree of kyphosis
- Any associated scoliotic curves
This allows us to ensure the treatment targets all relevant spinal curvatures and does not compromise one area while addressing another.
We pay special attention to the lumbar spine on the X-rays, as patients with Scheuermann’s often present with significant compensatory curves and other risk factors that must be understood before starting treatment.
Functional Scanning & Postural Analysis
At the start of treatment, we perform a 4D Formetric scan, which provides a visual representation of postural imbalances in a relaxed standing position. Additionally, we take clinical photos of the patient from the front, back, and sides, as well as in a forward bend, to help patients understand their natural posture and the goals of postural correction.
We also measure spinal rotation (ATR) using a Scoliometer, since a mild scoliosis is often present with Scheuermann’s and must be addressed as part of the overall treatment.
ScolioFys Approach to Scheuermann’s Treatment
Our comprehensive, individualized treatment programs for Scheuermann’s may include:
- Postural correction
- Ergonomic adjustment of daily positions to relieve pain
- Mobilization exercises and targeted stretching
- Schroth-based exercises adapted for hyperkyphosis
- Specific strength training
- Manual therapy
- Shockwave therapy
- Guidance on bracing (e.g. Kyphologic®) for growing children, and posture support or pain relief bracing for adults
Tailored Treatment Plans
Each treatment plan is customized based on the individual’s needs, goals, and condition severity. We assess the need for:
- One-on-one training and guidance
- Manual treatment
- Group therapy sessions
We do not offer standard protocols. Our primary goal is to empower the patient—helping them become independent, aware of problematic movement patterns, and capable of managing their condition long-term through postural awareness and targeted exercise.
